“I believe in having intention in everything I do, including the choices I make regarding equipment. SNAG® tools are created by PGA professionals and are absolutely ideal for teaching children golf. The instruments make the game manageable and digestible for students of all ages and the equipment also comes in a variety of sizes so that children can reap the benefits of training tools designed specifically for them.

Thank you to Greg for his kind comments!
Dear Members, The heart of the golf season is upon us, and with that the Georgia Amateur Championship gets underway July 12 at Ansley Golf Club - Settindown Creek with defending champion David Noll Jr. and 2011 runner-up Billy Mitchell as favorites. Please come out and watch Georgia’s finest take on this terrific venue! Though we marvel at the skills of the state’s best amateurs, I want to use this space to talk about a new golf initiative aimed at attracting and retaining new golfers for life. The SNAG program (Starting New at Golf) is the brainchild of Terry Anton. Though Terry now makes his home in Oklahoma, he is a Columbus, Ga., native with a successful golf rèsumè that includes time on the PGA TOUR, as well as winning the very first Atlanta Junior Golf Grand Championship.
Known as “Snagdaddy,”Terry tirelessly travels the globe spreading the word about SNAG, and that message is that golf now has modified equipment, rules and terminology to simplify the learning process for beginners, regardless of age. This is not unlike Tee Ball for aspiring baseball stars or QuickStart Tennis for those who dream of Wimbledon. The difference is that, until recently, golf did not have an equivalent scaled-down version.
It will come as no surprise to many of our readers, including this author, that golf is a very challenging game. In fact, exercise scientists rate golf as the second most difficult motor skills sport; right behind ice hockey. SNAG uses only two clubs, the “Launcher” to launch, pitch and chip; and the “Roller”, which as the name suggests, is used for putting. Each player has a Launch Pad and the target is a Flagsticky, the aboveground, hooked-material equivalent of golf hole. The SNAG ball is a little smaller than a tennis ball, and is covered with loop material, so it will adhere to the target’s hooks. Interestingly, and for very good reason, the ball weighs exactly the same as a traditional golf ball at 1.62 ounces.
The other very important differentiator with SNAG besides equipment and rules is that the game can be played on nontraditional venues like soccer fields, indoor gymnasiums and even at the beach.
Lest our member clubs get the wrong idea, it is imperative to understand that SNAG has as its immediate goal to help newcomers develop swing fundamentals more rapidly, with less frustration while having fun. It is the immediacy of success with SNAG that keeps players engaged and wanting to improve. The longer-term goal is that through their enjoyment and this unique preparation, these new golfers will not only find the transition to traditional equipment and courses easier, but they will embrace this logical next step in their development.
Prior to the loss of Payne Stewart, Terry and Payne played and traveled the PGA TOUR together. It was during his playing days, that Terry began to develop the theory behind and products to support SNAG. When U.S. Open champion Stewart saw what Terry had developed, he very simply was quoted saying, “This is how golf should be taught to beginners.”
Keep your eyes open for a SNAG event near you as GSGA, the Atlanta Junior Golf Association and other leading golf entities look to engage golf’s next generation of players.

Eagle Mountain's Assistant Golf Professional, Scott Van Engelen recently took the game of golf into one Valley school...in a unique fashion. Using SNAG golf equipment (stands for Starting New At Golf), Scott coordinated a golf instructional session at Children's First Academy, in Tempe. SNAG golf features tennis ball-like golf balls and larger, easier to hit clubs, therefore this particular "clinic" was conducted indoors, within the school's gym/multi-purpose room.

EWGA is a national organization committed to “Empowering, Enriching and Energizing Professional Women Through Golf!”
We work closely with EWGA as we feel it is a high caliber organization that can help to grow the game by providing women the opportunity to learn and play golf in their local communities. EWGA is a great way for women interested in golf to build relationships. As Pam says in this video “EWGA is all about connecting women to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and for life.”
The EWGA Foundation has launched an outreach program called, “Drive for Dreams” to share their good fortune with those less fortunate through contributions of golf equipment and other resources needed to “Give the Gift of Golf". Their first fundraising campaign under this initiative was earmarked to benefit a girls golf school run by Kenya’s only female golf professional, Rose Naliaka.
After Pam Swensen, CEO of EWGA, shared with us the inspiring story of Rose Naliaka’s girl’s golf school and her mission to grow girls golf in Kenya we immediately donated a SNAG Golf Coaching Kit so the girls could have fun learning the fundamentals of golf at the school.
The very generous donations of clubs, shoes, and other items made by EWGA members and golf industry partners were sent over to Kenya and after a long, long journey – and amidst much political upheaval throughout Kenya – the girls finally received the donations.
At the EWGA Conference held at Amelia Island Plantation, the audience heard firsthand from Rose how she uses the game of golf to teach life lessons to girls who otherwise lead a squalid existence in a country rife with HIV and illiteracy where the average life expectancy is only 47 years of age.
Rose is still active with her girls golf school in Kenya and she recently took six girls in the program to play in a golf tournament in Mombasa. "The EWGA Foundation 'Drive For Dreams' opened up a window of opportunity for us and we continue to shine!" , Rose said.

It was an amazing event! Over 350 girls attended and had a wonderful time learning the game, making new friends and having fun!
Since SNAG® is committed to growing the game by providing more new learners the opportunity to experience the fun game of golf, Suzy contacted us to be a part of this event. She was kind enough to write us personally to express her gratitude for our participation…see her comments below:
“Thank you so much for your vision and support for our inaugural 2012 Girls Golf Fair! The day was a tremendous success. We had over 1000 people in attendance and over 350 girls participating in the day’s activities. Your willingness to get involved and your support of my efforts were instrumental in growing girls’ golf and I am deeply grateful to you for our success! We even included the Mom’s and Dad’s in the day’s activities and engaged them with the Princess Paks and fun activities they could do with their children at home using SNAG. Saturday was incredible and Kate Tempesta and George Devita were amazing as always. They were huge contributors to our set up and accomplishments on site. The facility was decked in SNAG product including Dennis Walters Show and the girls and parents became raving fans. Together we did grow the game and I look forward to our future discussions of taking this show on the road. My sincerest thanks and gratitude for all the time and effort spent to make this event real. I included just a few of the many comments I received and listed them below.” With great appreciation, Suzy Whaley PGA Professional, LPGA Professional, District 1 Director, National Junior Chair PGA of America
Comments from the day: "I really thought it was an amazing event the kids had a ball!! My kids are really good at telling the truth and they loved it to death and were sad we had to leave and catch a flight. I think our group can single handedly change the perception of golf as a boring old guy sport into a fun and exciting thing that every little girl wants to be a part of!!!" Kiernan Schindler Executive Director LPGA USGA Girls Golf "Congrats to you and everyone else that pulled it all together and took the time to Grow the Game with the girls." Jim Kmietek. "What a wonderful event you hosted on Saturday! There were a multitude of happy girls there and they all seemed so excited about golf! Well done!!!!!!" Barbara Howard "I took my daughter to the first tee event at TPC and I wanted to tell you it was a spectacular day. All the volunteers were wonderful. Suzy did an amazing job and Dennis Walters was inspirational. Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention." Ken "Hello! My daughter Sophia Pirolli had a great time on Saturday and I just thought I would send you a picture my husband took of the two of you. She had the time of her life! Hopefully it was the first of many too come and we hope to see you again for some lessons. Thanks for a great day." Andrea Pirolli "I had a wonderful day and thank you for helping to make it a wonderful day for my granddaughter. She told me she had "lots of fun" and wanted to go to the range tomorrow and was hitting golf balls in the back yard after I brought her home. Again, many thanks for managing a great day for 350+ young ladies - I know they certainly appreciated your efforts as did their parents and grandparents." Ann "I brought my daughter and her friend Amy to this event today at Cromwell/TPC. Thanks so much for inspiring my daughter to play golf and thanks for the great event." Chad

"It’s difficult to put into words exactly what happened over a five day period but your European SNAG team was amazing. The inaugural St. Andrews Golf Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland was held March 28 – April 1. The Festival was created to celebrate 600 years of golf and also to draw attention to the official home of golf – St. Andrews. St. Andrews is the single most recognizable brand name in golf and it has global recognition as the Home of Golf. SNAG Golf was one of several companies that participated at the Festival. SNAG was given open space opposite the first hole of The Old Course just steps from the R&A. The two European reps, Colin Roberts and Dan Killen set up the SNAG equipment and practice course every morning. There was much buzz from onlookers as the colorful targets were set out and children arrived for their very first try with SNAG. Five local schools and one local children’s charity were invited to take part in the festival and the SNAG area was crowded every day with children of all ages laughing and learning golf. With the warmest weather in over 100 years, Scotland and St. Andrews was blessed with sunny skies every day and the perfect climate for strolling the streets and taking part in Festival activities. Colin and Dan went over and beyond in their duties with the children and provided the “fun” platform for the Festival. On the final evening of the Festival, a gala celebration took place at Younger Hall and 10 awards were given to recognize and honor individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to the game of golf. Award categories included golf literature, photography, golf art, golf humor, women’s golf and more. SNAG received the St. Andrews Festival Award for Golf Innovation. Dan Killen accepted the award on behalf of SNAG. It was a perfect culmination to a week-long celebration of the game of golf. In 2013, we hope to dedicate an entire day to children and youth golf with various activities around St. Andrews and we hope SNAG will return as a Festival partner."

NEW IDEAS CAN GET YOUR MEMBERS (AND THEIR OFFSPRING) EXCITED ABOUT PLAYING GOLFAND HELP GROW THE GAME, TOO. KNOWING WHICH IDEAS TO IMPLEMENT IS THE TRICK SNAG NEW PLAYERS
Getting juniors and beginners hooked on golf has always been a huge hurdle. Troon Golf, the largest third-party manager of golf and club operations in the world, has struck up a partnership with SNAG (Starting New At Golf). SNAG, launched in 2001, combines modified equipment and specialized teaching methods, like colorcoded teaching aids and oversized equipment, to teach all elements of the swing without all the confusing technical talk.
The Troon-run Kierland golf Club at the Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, has been running a successful SNAG program for nearly two years. Children between the ages of 5 and 14 practice with colorful targets, balls, flags, and hoops during the one-hour program each Saturday. Heath Morden, the club’s head professional, says SNAG is so popular that it is incorporated into everyday clinics and lessons. Kierland quickly recouped its money on its initial investment. “It is an easy approach to teaching people the game,” he says. “We are tickled pink to have it. I don’t know what we would do without it. I think more courses should use this.”
SNAG’s staying power within the industry initially convinced Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg, NJ to buy SNAG gear at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando in January. “When I saw SNAG Golf years ago, I wondered, ‘Is it a fad or the real thing?’” recalls Art Walton, Vice President of Golf operations at the resort. “Now that it’s been launched and successful at other locations, the fact that it has staying power and it’s fun [made us] realize it can be part of a broader arsenal of tools to attract people to the game.”
